A Promise Kept
Dan Millican's letter to fans...

"A Promise Kept" is a thriller/drama that positions Sean Patrick Flanery in a role thats a first for him--he plays a father.  I asked Sean how he prepares for a role like and he told me he doesn't do anything special.  Sean is not a "method" actor who has to become the person hes portraying and go to the depths no matter how painful or uncomfortable.  Sean said, "if its that hard, maybe you should be doing something else.  Its acting."

In my opinion, Sean can say this because he is so incredibly naturally gifted as an actor.  Maybe other actors with less talent need to go to these places to prepare for a role.  Sean can be joking about Elvis while the camera is rolling up to speed and I say action and wham! he's suddenly that character and so believable.

I notice on your site somewhere you have a poll of favorite SPF movies.  You'll be pleased to know I posed that question to Sean who at first side-stepped it saying its too hard to name one film.  But then I asked him which one he's the most proud of and he named one of his films...  The answer is... "Run the Wild Fields."

So why did I choose Sean for this movie?  I am one of those filmmakers who don't like art house films.  I like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.  So in the early nineties, when I heard there was this new series I made sure I watched every one.  Then a year and a half ago, I was in Italy at this film market and was watching movies that were being sold by distributors and I went to school (University) with Lou Diamond Philips so I walked into one with him in it called Lone Hero.  I really enjoyed the flick.  It was a great spin on a Western moving it to contemporary times yet maintaining a Western genre.  And I reacquainted myself with Sean's work after that.

So one day on the set, I was walking to the trailers and chatting with Sean.  I asked him what was the deal with the Young Indiana Jones shows with the child?  I could tell he was bothered by that one.  One thing he truly hates is when he sees a child mistreated.  The child playing the really young Indy was let go after a few shows when the producers saw the ratings for his episodes werent there.  He was supposed to get more shows and Sean didnt like how they treated the child actor.

Anyway, look for more A Promise Kept information and behind the scenes stuff in the Directors Diary section.  I might even talk to Sean some more this week.  Take care all, and I hope when you see my film, you'll end up rating it up there somewhere ahead of Diamond Hunters.

Sincerely,

Daniel Millican
